What is Ielts?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to help you work, study or migrate
to a country where English is the native language. This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New
Zealand, the UK and USA.

Intended for non-native speakers who are looking to study or work in an English-speaking environment,
IELTS training is an internationally recognized system for testing English language ability in four
categories:

  1. Listening
  2. Reading
  3. Speaking
  4. Writing

Why is IELTS important?

IELTS is one of the most trusted English language tests across the globe with more than 10,000 organizations recognizing it internationally. The IELTS certification is recognized by the UK, USA, AustraliaCanada, New Zealand, Singapore, Europe and 140 more countries across the globe. The certification is accepted by academic institutions, companies, professional bodies and government organizations. The test is considered the standard for English language testing and their certification is recognized for both academic and immigration purposes. This test assesses the English language skills of a candidate by testing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Tests are available throughout the year in more than 1600 centers in over 140 countries. With IELTS scores, you can study in some of the best universities in Australia, top universities in Canada, USA, UK and New Zealand.

Exam Pattern

Listening

Test Duration: 30 minutes

  • Candidates listen to four recordings and answer 10 objective questions from each recording in 30 minutes.
  • 1st Recording – Dialog in an everyday issue.
  • 2nd Recording – Monologue in a social issue.
  • 3rd Recording – Academic Discussion.
  • 4th Recording – Monologue in an academic issue.

 

Reading

Test Duration: 60 minutes

Academic Test
  • Reading Comprehension format.
  • Candidates will read three passages.
  • Length of each passage is of around 1000 words.
  • From each passage 12/14 objective questions.
  • Likewise, 40 questions to answer from 3 passages.
  • All answers need to be transferred in an answer sheet.
General test
  • Reading Comprehension format.
  • Candidates read 5 passages.
  • Total 40 objective questions.
  • All answers need to be transferred in an answer sheet.
  • Extracts from Notices, Advertisements, Short texts.

 

Writing

Time Duration:60 minutes

Academic Test

Task 1:-

  • Report Writing based on graphical figures.
  • More than 150 words of descriptive writing.
  • Suggested time: 20 minutes.

Task 2:-

  • Essay Writing based on a given topic.
  • More than 250 words of Persuasive essay.
  • Suggested time: 40 minutes.
General Test

Task 1:-

  • Letter Writing.
  • More than 150 words of formal/semi-formal/informal letter.
  • Suggested time: 20 minutes

Task 2:-

  • Essay Writing based on a given topic.
  • More than 250 words of Persuasive essay.
  • Suggested time: 40 minutes.

 

Speaking

Test Duration: 11 – 15 minutes

  • Conducted on a different day.
  • A one to one conversation in an interview format.
  • Face to face interaction with an oral examiner.
  • Part 1: General Introduction (4-5 minutes)
  • Part 2: The long turn. 2 minutes of uninterrupted speaking on a given topic
  • Part 3: Discussion. More abstract ideas (4 – 5 minutes)

How are the sections in IELTS Graded?

Grading in the Listening Test

Listening Section will have a total of 40 objective questions. For each correct answer you get one point and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Students have to be careful regarding spellings and grammars as well. The grading is done as per the table below:

Students have to be careful regarding spellings and grammars as well even in the reading section. The grading of reading section for General Training Test and Academic Test might vary a little. Both the grading tables are provided as below:

Grading in the Writing Section

Both the Writing Task are graded together in a band score of 0 to 9. The assessment criteria depend on the following four factors that are equally graded:

Grading in Speaking Section

The Speaking Task is graded in a band score of 0 to 9. The assessment criteria depend on the following four factors that are equally graded:
